The Science of Self-Realization

ISKCON's philosophy is based on the ancient Vedic texts, particularly the Bhagavad-gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam, as presented by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.

These timeless teachings provide perfect knowledge about the self, God, and the relationship between them. The Bhagavad-gita, spoken by Lord Krishna 5,000 years ago, contains all spiritual knowledge necessary for human society and addresses the most essential questions of life.

Five Main Topics of Bhagavad-gita

The Bhagavad-gita addresses five fundamental subjects that encompass all spiritual knowledge:

Īśvara (The Supreme Controller)

īśvaraḥ paramaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ

Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the original source, sustainer, and destroyer of the entire creation. He is the ultimate controller and the supreme object of worship.

Jīva (The Living Entity)

mamaivāṁśo jīva-loke

We are eternal spiritual souls, parts and parcels of Krishna. We are not the material body but conscious beings who transmigrate from one body to another until liberation.

Prakṛti (Material Nature)

prakṛtiṁ puruṣaṁ caiva

The material world is a temporary manifestation of Krishna's external energy. It consists of eight elements and operates under the three modes of nature: goodness, passion, and ignorance.

Kāla (Time)

kālo 'smi loka-kṣaya-kṛt

Time is the controlling factor that brings about changes in the material world. It represents Krishna's power that governs birth, death, and all transformations in creation.

Karma (Action & Reaction)

karmaṇy evādhikāras te

Every action has a reaction. By performing our prescribed duties as an offering to Krishna, we can transcend the bondage of karma and attain spiritual liberation.

Core Philosophical Principles

1
The Soul is Eternal

We are not the physical body but eternal spiritual souls. The soul never dies; it simply changes bodies like a person changes clothes. Understanding this truth frees us from the fear of death.

2
Krishna is the Supreme Being

Krishna is the original form of God, possessing all opulences in full. He is the source of all incarnations and the ultimate object of worship for all living entities.

3
Law of Karma

Every action produces a reaction. Good actions bring good results, and bad actions bring suffering. By acting in Krishna consciousness, we can transcend karma.

4
Reincarnation

The soul transmigrates from one body to another based on its consciousness at the time of death. This cycle continues until the soul achieves liberation.

5
Devotional Service

Bhakti-yoga, or devotional service to Krishna, is the highest spiritual path. It purifies the heart and enables the soul to return to its eternal home.

One will find in the Bhagavad-gita all that is contained in other scriptures, but the reader will also find things which are not to be found elsewhere.
- His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Three Paths of Yoga

The Bhagavad-gita describes three main paths of spiritual realization, with bhakti-yoga being the highest:

Jñāna-yoga

jñānena tu tad ajñānam

The path of knowledge that seeks to understand the absolute truth through philosophical inquiry and meditation on the impersonal aspect of God.

Karma-yoga

yogaḥ karmasu kauśalam

The path of action where one performs their prescribed duties without attachment to results, gradually purifying the consciousness.

Bhakti-yoga

bhaktyā tv ananyayā śakya

The path of devotional service and love for Krishna. This is the highest and most direct path to spiritual realization and the ultimate goal of all yoga.

The Ultimate Goal

Back to Godhead

The ultimate goal of ISKCON philosophy is to help every soul return to their eternal spiritual home in the kingdom of God.

Through the practice of Krishna consciousness, chanting the holy names, and following the teachings of the Bhagavad-gita, one can achieve the perfection of life: eternal, blissful association with Krishna in the spiritual world.

tyaktvā dehaṁ punar janma naiti mām eti so 'rjuna

"After giving up this body, one who knows Krishna in truth never takes birth again, but attains His eternal abode."
